Pine Lodge Campus Study

Dept. of Social and Health Services on behalf of the Dept. of Children, Youth & Families

This project for DSHS designs a new state-owned, contractor-run facility on the grounds of the Eastern State Hospital / Pine Lodge campus in Medical Lake, WA. The new facility will be capable of housing approximately 24 to 32 youth ranging from 12 to 21 years old. The youth served by this facility will require the most intensive level of therapeutic services available in a facility-based environment and will afford the State the ability to keep youth in the state of WA and continue to receive care. The complexities of the youth served require special attention and design strategies to intentionally segregate populations while maintaining staff efficiencies. The design team explored a multitude of supported and unsupported sites on campus and also studied the implications on the built environment, staffing ratios in a residential-type setting.
